Variety Vlahiko

Vlachiko is a rare and emerging red grape variety cultivated in the mountainous vineyards of Epirus. It can be found in the semi-mountainous vineyards of Zitsa, as well as in those of Metsovo, which are the highest vineyards in Greece and among the most elevated in Europe. As a plant, it is vigorous and productive, and it is a late-ripening variety, maturing from mid-September to mid-October.

Traditionally, it was blended with other local varieties, such as the red Bekyari and the white Debina. Today, single-varietal wines are becoming increasingly common, as its organoleptic characteristics captivate both Greek and foreign wine lovers, especially when elegance and finesse are sought in the tasting experience.

Aromatically, it is characterized by fruity and spicy notes, with dominant hints of cherry, blackberry, plum, sweet spices, and pepper. The body is refined, the tannins are soft, with moderate alcohol and a firm acidity, a result of its mountainous origin. The color is a vibrant ruby, though never particularly deep.

The wines are produced using classic red winemaking techniques, often incorporating pre-fermentation extraction to enhance color intensity. Aging in barrels is common to enrich aromatic complexity, structure, and mouthfeel. The gentle characteristics of the variety make the resulting wines suitable for consumption shortly after bottling, although they are also well-suited for aging.

Wines made from the Vlachiko variety do not carry a Protected Designation of Origin, but they are permitted in the production of wines with Protected Geographical Indication "Epirus," "Metsovo," and "Ioannina."
