Thrapsathiri is a white, emerging variety from Crete. It is cultivated across all regional units of the island. This grape is well-suited to the local climate, as it is particularly drought-resistant. It is a productive plant, but its yield should be managed to maintain quality.
Wines made from Thrapsathiri are gently aromatic, featuring fruity notes such as pear, melon, and peach. On the palate, they are relatively full-bodied and juicy, with balanced acidity. Occasionally, they are aged in barrels, gaining a creamy texture and sweet hints of vanilla.
In recent years, single-varietal wines made from Thrapsathiri have been increasing, but it is still commonly blended with other varieties, such as Vilana, Vidiano, Dafni, Plyto, Moschato, and Chardonnay.
It contributes to the production of the dry wines P.O.P. Sitia, P.O.P. Chandakas – Candia, as well as the sweet wines P.O.P. Malvasia Sitia and P.O.P. Malvasia Chandakas – Candia.
