Moscato Alexandriou is a white aromatic variety, likely originating from North Africa. It is one of the three most common types within the extensive family of Moscatos, alongside White Moscato and Muscat of Hamburg. The first plantings in Greece took place in the early 20th century. Today, it is primarily found on the island of Lemnos, where it occupies the majority of the total vineyard area, as well as sporadically in other regions of Greece.
It is less widespread than White Moscato, as it produces grapes with milder, less complex aromas. This late-ripening variety is sensitive to diseases and resilient to drought. In the dry and warm environment of Lemnos, where it is typically cultivated, the vineyards are shaped in a cup-like formation.
The wines exhibit floral, fruity, and herbal aromas, with a rich body, above-average alcohol content, and moderate acidity. It rarely ages in barrels, and when it does, the impact is subtle and supportive, without overshadowing the variety's aromas. In addition to dry wines, Moscato Alexandriou is also used to produce exquisite sweet wines, as well as delightful sparkling wines. It is utilized in the production of the PDO wines of Lemnos and PDO Muscat of Lemnos.
