Athiri is one of the oldest grape varieties. It is a white variety that originates from the Aegean Sea region. Early-ripening and with thin skin, it is particularly sensitive to diseases but resilient to drought. It produces high-quality wines even from high yields, which is characteristic of the variety; however, the best results come from old vines in mountainous vineyards and calcareous soils.
It is found in the Cyclades, mainly on Santorini and in the Dodecanese, and is the only winemaking variety in the semi-mountainous northern vineyards of Rhodes. Historically, it has played a role in the production of Malvasia wine in Crete, and it continues to hold significant importance in the island's wine production today. In the vineyards of Porto Carras in Sithonia, Halkidiki, it was discovered in the late 1960s at the suggestion of Mrs. Kourakou.
The aromas characteristic of wines made from Athiri include floral notes, as well as apple, peach, and tropical fruit. On the palate, it is soft, with low acidity and a balanced body. It often participates in blends with Assyrtiko, as their characteristics complement each other.
Wines made from Athiri are produced using classic white winemaking techniques, fermented at low temperatures and without the influence of oak. Additionally, it offers refreshing sparkling wines, as well as sweet wines made from sun-dried grapes or fortified wines. Some of these wines are Protected Designation of Origin (PDO), as it is included in the following six PDO zones.
In the zone PDO Santorini, with Assyrtiko and Aidani, PDO Rhodes, with Assyrtiko and Malagouzia, PDO Melitona Slopes, with Assyrtiko and Roditis, PDO Handakas – Candia, with Vilana, Vidiano, Thrapsathiri, and Assyrtiko, PDO Malvasia Sitia, with Assyrtiko, Thrapsathiri, Liatiko (white winemaking), Moschato Spinas, and Malvasia di Candia Aromatica, PDO Malvasia Handakas – Candia, with Assyrtiko, Vidiano, Thrapsathiri, Liatiko (white winemaking), Moschato Spinas, and Malvasia di Candia Aromatica. Additionally, it is involved in many wines with Protected Geographical Indication throughout Greece.
