The PDO zone of Mesenikola spans the communities of Moschato, Mesenikola, and Morfovouni in the municipality of Lake Plastira. The vineyards are located on the eastern slopes of the Agrafa mountain range, at altitudes between 250 and 700 meters, adjacent to the artificial Lake Plastira, where ideal conditions for quality production are created.
The grape varieties involved are 70% Black Mesenikola, with the remaining 30% comprising the French varieties Syrah and Carignan. Both the village and the grape variety are named after a Frankish knight, Monsieur Nicola, who settled in the area in 1455. While viticulture has been prevalent since ancient times, his passion and encouragement elevated it to a primary occupation for the locals. In his honor, and through a play on the name Monsieur Nicola, the name Mesenikola was born.
The wines are produced using classic red winemaking techniques and do not require barrel aging. To be labeled as "Selected" (Reserve), the wine must be aged in barrels for 12 months, and for 18 months to be classified as "Specially Selected" (Grand Reserve).
The wines exhibit a deep ruby color, and as they age, they develop garnet reflections. Their aromas are fruity and spicy, with notes of vanilla, smoke, and cedar when they spend time in the barrel. They have a rich body, soft tannins, and a pleasant aftertaste.
