The variety Carignan originates from Spain (where it is known as Carinena), but it is primarily cultivated in Southern France, particularly in the Languedoc Rousillon region. This variety is notably productive and late-ripening, requiring warm conditions and dry weather during the autumn months to achieve full maturity. It produces wines with fruity aromas, strong tannins, and high acidity—characteristics that necessitate careful management to result in a pleasant tasting experience.
In addition to Spain and France, it can also be found in regions of Italy and the New World, such as California. In Greece, it is not particularly widespread, but it is included in the wines of the Protected Designation of Origin Mesenikola.
