In the PDO Dafnes zone, both dry and sweet red wines are produced exclusively from the Liatiko variety. It is located in the western part of Heraklion County and includes parts of the village of Dafnes and neighboring communities. The Dafnes area is believed to have derived its name from the laurel plant, which grew at the temple of Agia Zoni. It is just 18 km from the city of Heraklion.
Since ancient times, Dafnes has been one of the most significant wine-producing regions of Crete. Even today, viticulture, winemaking, and wine are integral elements of the local culture.
The dry red wines of PDO Dafnes exhibit aromas of ripe red fruits and sweet spices, with an initial deep red color that quickly develops garnet reflections.
The sweet wines of PDO Dafnes are made either from sun-dried grapes or fortified with sun-dried grapes, characterized by a dark caramel hue and aromas of dried fruits, coffee, and chocolate, featuring a velvety body and a long finish.
