The Protected Designation of Origin zone of Χάνδακας – Candia was established in 2011 and spans a large area in the Heraklion region, encompassing numerous communities from the northernmost part of the island to the southernmost. The name Χάνδακας – Candia was the designation for the city of Heraklion until the 19th century.
The PDO wines of Χάνδακας – Candia can be either white or red dry wines with the following specifications:
White: at least 85% Vilanera, with the remaining 15% optionally including the varieties Vidiano, Assyrtiko, Athiri, and Thrapsathiri. Their organoleptic profile is characterized by fruity and floral aromatic notes, with a light greenish-yellow color.
Red: Kotsifali 70% & Mandilaria 30%, featuring characteristics of dried fruits and spices, with a bright ruby color and orange highlights.
